Well I have always liked links courses better than anything in the USA...but then there a re a few USA courses I love and now I know why...They are really difficult. So my new list is based on just that....play and suffer. (Top 11 because I couldnt choose).
1. Cruden Bay, 2. Royal County Down 3. Royal Porthcawl 4. Royal Dornoch 5. Kiawah island 6. Sand Hills 7. PGA West 8. Bethpage Black 9. Lytham St Anne, 10. Ballybunion New 11. Sawgrass

BEST VALUE IN GOLF...
For the best value in US golf, World Woods Golf club about 45 minutes outside of Tampa is a must. Both courses rank in the top 100 (depending on the publication you trust), but the Pine Barrens course is Tom Fazio's breakout design (and usually is found in the top 25)... Rolling Oaks is the less famous brother - a more traditional parkland layout that is well worth its money, but I'd rather play 36 holes on the Pine Barrens course.
Why best value? Greenfee is $65 (incl. cart)... most of the year!

having played 8 of the 10 listed i would challenge that Ballybunion New needs to be on that list and that Dornoch is too highly rated and is pure recency effect. Pine Valley makes this list well.
