With a highly forgettable 2006 behind us (thank God for The Muse), 2007 is off to an epic start, reminiscent of 2001. This year, I decided to reserve 5/5 rating for those in the running for “CD of the Year”. [Apologies to Joss Stone – she would have gotten a 5/5 in 2006, but the competition is tough this year].

The Shins – “Wincing the Night Away” (5/5) – They keep getting better.
Fall Out Boy – “Infinity on High” (5/5). Neal Avron and Babyface have done for FOB what Dr. Dre did for Eminem. Legendary.
Mika – Life in Cartoon Motion (5/5); Maybe the most creative CD of the year. Acoustic remake of “Satellite” is epic.
Johnny Cash – “Here Was a Man” (5/5); So soulful, you’ll cry. A masterpiece from one of the greatest.
Augustana – [2005] “All the Stars and Boulevards” (4/5); Been out for 18 months, and finally getting traction in 2007. “Boston” is single of the year so far.
Griffin House – "Homecoming" (4/5); great sophomore CD.
Joss Stone – "Introducing Joss Stone" (4/5); talented follow up to “Soul Sessions”
Jack’s Mannequin – [2006] "Everything in Transit" 4/5 – Like Augustana, finally getting recognition. “Bruised” will make a run at single of year
Good Charlotte – “Good Morning Revival” (4/5) – FINALLY!! The new CD was worth the wait!
Matthew Wertz – “Everything in Between” (4/5) – maybe the improved in the group. He has matured into a talented songwriter and soulful singer with amazing range. 3rd time was a charm! (Although his first 2 are great!)
Brandtson [2006] – Hello, Control (4/5) – probably the best talent no one has heard of. If you like Arcade Fire and The Muse, get this CD immediately.
Arcade Fire – "Neon Bible" (4/5) – The Canadians are finally in the game! Brilliantly arranged. .
Modest Mouse – “We Were Dead Before the Ship Sank” (3/5) – debatable if this should be 4/5 depending on your tastes. Combines depth and texture, but (in my opinion), missing the epic tune.
Reliant K – “Five Score and Seven Years Ago” (3/5) – Much improved over “mmHmm”. Music lovers will appreciate it for what it’s worth; music critics will hate it.
Daughtry – “Daughtry” (3/5) – unexpectedly good debut from an Idol loser. Worth getting.
Norah Jones – "Not Too Late" (3/5) – good, but not great. What you’ve come to expect from Norah.
John Butler Trio – "Grand National" (3/5) – another good, but not great release. If you’re a JBT fan, you’ll like it. If not, get Matthew Wertz and Griffin House first.
Amy Winehouse – “Back to Black” (3/5); She gets a 3/5 for originality, but I really wanted to like this CD more than I did. It’s a bit dry and immature. Probably deserves a 2/5.
Bloc Party – “Weekend in the City” (2/5) – Ok, but didn’t love it.
TV on the Radio – "Return to Cookie Mountain" (2/5) – Nice try, but rather annoying as a full CD.
The Ataris – "Welcome the Night" (1/5) – I thought after “So Long, Astoria”, they’d finally hit the big leagues. I was wrong. This CD is rather forgettable.
Finger Eleven – Them vs. You vs. Me (0/5) – I gave it one last try. After 2 bad CDs that each contained 1 average song, they released another bad CD with no average songs. Don’t buy it.

Front runners for single of the year – “Grace Kelly” [Mika]; “Boston” [Augustana]; “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” [Fall Out Boy]; “Bruised” [Jack’s Mannequin]; “How Great Thou Art” [Johnny Cash]

Enjoy!
