If ever you needed more reasons to buy australian wines...Robert Parker has just scored a 100 point syrah in california: "just for the love of it" (really). In a bidding frenzy this weekend, 20 bottles went for $500 each. Parker wines scored 95+ are regularly available for $50 dollars or less. Yes France and the USA can make better wines but the values are a disgrace.

HEADLINE: 2002 AUSTRALIAN WINE COSTING $800/BOTTLE !!! "RINGLAND SHIRAZ" RATED 100 POINTS BY ROBERT PARKER!
Baited by the commentary about California Syrah's costing a fortune... Let it be known that there is a Shiraz from Australia that is also rated 100 points called "Ringland Shiraz", vintage 2002 which is now selling at $800.USD per/bottle on Winebid.com. Yes.... Australia is cheap for daily glugging, but for Australia's best, Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Ringland, and other notables, you will spend no less than $250 USD/bottle on a decent vintage and more on a great vintage. The Ringland Shiraz... a perfect example of underestimating the market.
Australia vintners are no different than the top vintners from France, Italy, California, or even the recent Chile entries... Prices for the top wines are rising dramatically as the demand and market for these top end wines expand while the number of wines in this space stays relatively unchanged. Sounds like the marketers missed out on the potential premium that they could charge!
